| 24th British Film Institute Lesbian and Gay Film Festival Opens |
 The British Film Institute’s annual Lesbian and Gay Film Festival opened last night in central London. This event has been held annually for 24 years. The festival opened with the new film, “The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister.” Ann Listerwas a British playboy, back in the day, who had many romantic encounters with women and kept journals of them, which were later discovered. She has been described at Britain’s “first modern lesbian.”Other films being shown include “I Killed My Mother”, written, produced, directed by and starring 20-year-old Xavier Dolan, and” Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls”, Leanne Pooley’s award-winning documentary about Jools and Lynda Topp, the folk-singing lesbian twins and national celebrities in New Zealand. The festival runs through March 31st and the closing night gala screening will be “Children of God” by Kareem J Mortimer. The film described as being a love story between an artist and a local boy and unfolds against a backdrop of violent homophobia and social unease in the Bahamas. Films are not the only draw the festival has to offer. There will also be club nights, events and networking opportunities for the LGBT community to interact socially and professionally. The festival will premier more than 75 films and documentaries. It now has the distinction of being the third biggest film festival in the UK.
